IELTS Writing Task 2 – Understand the Question Like a Pro!
A lot of IELTS candidates get feedback like this after writing Task 2:
“The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed.”
Sounds fine? Maybe. But this usually puts you in the Band 6 to 6.5 range—not enough for you.
To reach Band 7 or 8, you must fully and clearly address all parts of the question and develop your ideas with strong logic and examples.
Sample IELTS Question
Some people believe that children should be taught how to be good parents at school. Do you agree or disagree with this idea?
Step-by-Step Breakdown
Main Topic
“Children should be taught how to be good parents” – This is the central idea.
Focus is on children learning parenting skills—not parenting in general.
বাংলায় ব্যাখ্যা: প্রশ্নটি বলছে, শিশুদের স্কুলে ভবিষ্যতে ভালো অভিভাবক হওয়ার শিক্ষা দেওয়া উচিত কিনা। অনেকে ভুল করে বাবা-মা কীভাবে ভালো অভিভাবক হতে পারে সেটা লিখে ফেলে। এতে টপিক ভুল হয়ে যায়।
Context: At School
The question is specifically about formal education settings—schools, not homes or society.
বাংলায় ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে বলা হয়েছে, শেখানোটা স্কুলে হবে কিনা; তাই আপনাকে আলোচনা করতে হবে স্কুল এই দায়িত্ব নেবে কিনা।
For example:
- Should parenting be part of the school curriculum?
- Is it too early for children to learn these things?
Instruction: Do you agree or disagree?
This is a single-view argument essay: you must take a clear side.
- Agree → Explain why teaching parenting in school is a good idea.
- Disagree → Explain why it’s not appropriate or effective.
বাংলায় ব্যাখ্যা: আপনাকে অবশ্যই একটা অবস্থান নিতে হবে—আপনি একমত, না কি অসম্মত। দু’দিক নিয়ে আলোচনা করলেও, শেষ পর্যন্ত আপনার স্পষ্ট মতামত থাকতে হবে।
Support with Ideas & Examples
The examiner looks for well-developed arguments and realistic examples.
Examples of ideas:
- Children can learn empathy and responsibility.
- School might not be the right place for such personal topics.
- Not all students want to be parents.
বাংলায় উদাহরণ:
- শিশুদের দায়িত্ববোধ শেখানো যায়।
- পারিবারিক মূল্যবোধ আগে পরিবার থেকেই আসা উচিত।
- স্কুলের সিলেবাসে অনেক কিছু আগে থেকেই আছে—আরও চাপ দেওয়া ঠিক না।
Mistakes That Lower Your Score
If you miss these points, you risk staying at Band 6–6.5:
- Only talk about parenting in general → Off-topic.
- Mention adults instead of children → Misunderstood the task.
- Don’t clearly state agree/disagree → Weak response.
- Ignore the school context → Incomplete answer.
In that case, the examiner will say: “Main parts are appropriately addressed”—meaning you got the basic idea, but didn’t cover everything in depth.

লেখার আগে প্রশ্নটা ৩ বার পড়ুন
- প্রথমবার → প্রশ্নের সারমর্ম বুঝবেন।
- দ্বিতীয়বার → মূল টপিক ও নির্দেশনা ধরবেন।
- তৃতীয়বার → নিশ্চিত করবেন কিছু মিস হয়নি।
অনেকেই শুধু একবার পড়ে লেখা শুরু করে, ফলে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ বাদ পড়ে যায়।
আন্ডারলাইন করুন মূল অংশগুলো
প্রশ্নে সাধারণত ৩টি অংশ থাকে: টপিক, নির্দেশনা, প্রসঙ্গ।
উদাহরণ: “children should be taught parenting at school” → এখানে “children”, “parenting”, “at school” আলাদা করে চিহ্নিত করুন।
চিন্তা করুন—সব দিক কাভার করছেন তো?
যদি প্রশ্নে “advantages and disadvantages” জানতে চাওয়া হয়, কিন্তু আপনি শুধু সুবিধা লিখলেন—উত্তর অসম্পূর্ণ হবে।
লেখার আগে সময় নিয়ে ভাবুন:
- আমি কি সব দিক নিয়ে লিখছি?
- আমার মতামত কি স্পষ্ট?
- আমার উদাহরণগুলো কি প্রাসঙ্গিক?
এই তিন ধাপ নিয়মিত মানলে আপনার Task Response স্কোর অবশ্যই উন্নতি হবে।
Final Thought
“Appropriately addressed” means you’re on the right track—but still not fully there.
If you want Band 7.5 or 8, you need to go beyond “appropriate.” You must be complete, focused, and persuasive.
